Crescent Taco Ring with Mild Taco Dust

This taco ring uses crescent-roll triangles to wrap a drained beef filling seasoned with Mild Taco Dust. Cool the filling before shaping, leave a clear opening in the middle and check the inner dough before serving. Allow about 65 minutes, including cooling and a short rest.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound (454 g) 90% lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup (40 g) finely diced yellow onion
  • 2 level teaspoons (10 ml) Desert Dust Mild Taco Seasoning
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) water
  • 1 cup (4 ounces / 113 g) shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 cans (8 ounces / 227 g each) refrigerated crescent-roll dough, 8 triangles per can

Directions

  1. Cook the filling. Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Cook beef and onion in a skillet over medium heat for 7–9 minutes, breaking up lumps. Reach 160°F (71°C), then drain excess fat. Stir in Mild Taco Dust and water; simmer 2–3 minutes until moist but no liquid pools.
  2. Cool and add cheese. Transfer the filling to a shallow heatproof bowl and let it cool for about 10 minutes until warm rather than steaming. Stir in the cheddar. Line an 18-by-13-inch metal baking sheet with parchment; keep the dough refrigerated until ready to shape.
  3. Make the dough ring. Separate the dough into 16 triangles. Overlap their short bases around a 5-inch circle on the sheet, with pointed ends facing outward like sun rays. Press the overlapping bases lightly together; leave the center open.
  4. Fill and tuck. Distribute the beef mixture evenly over the joined bases. Lift each triangle tip over the filling toward the center and tuck it beneath the inner dough edge. Leave small gaps between wraps rather than stretching the dough tight.
  5. Bake and rest. Bake 20–25 minutes, until golden, the thick inner dough is fully baked with no sticky raw layer, and the filling reaches 165°F (74°C). If the top colors early, cover loosely with foil and continue. Rest 10 minutes before slicing with a serrated knife.

Yield: 6 servings; one ring. Prep timing: 20 mins, including filling cooling. Cooking timing: 30–40 mins + 10 mins resting.

RECIPE TIPS & FAQS

WHAT KIND OF DOUGH SHOULD I BUY?

Use two 8-ounce cans of refrigerated crescent-roll dough containing eight triangles each. Check the package baking guidance; this recipe uses standard crescent dough at 375°F. A sheet of puff pastry, pizza dough or biscuit dough behaves differently and is not a direct swap. Keep the dough cold until the filling has cooled enough to handle.

HOW DO I STOP THE FILLING FROM LEAKING OUT?

Drain the cooked beef and simmer away visible water before adding cheese. Divide the filling evenly around the joined triangle bases and tuck each tip underneath the inside edge. A few little gaps and stray crumbs are normal. Avoid adding salsa, sour cream or wet chopped tomatoes inside the ring; serve them separately if wanted.

WHY DOES THE BEEF FILLING NEED TO COOL?

Very hot filling can soften the chilled dough before you finish shaping it. Spread the cooked mixture in a shallow bowl while you prepare the pan, then add the cheese when it is warm rather than steaming. This short cooling step is for assembly, not storage: shape and bake promptly. Do not leave cooked beef sitting out for hours.

HOW CAN I TELL WHETHER THE INNER DOUGH IS BAKED?

The narrow inside edge has overlapping dough, so inspect it as well as the golden top. Lift a small inner flap with a fork; it should look set and bread-like rather than wet or sticky. Check the filling at 165°F (74°C). If needed, cover the browned top loosely with foil and continue baking a few minutes at a time.

WHAT SHOULD I SERVE WITH A TACO RING?

Set out shredded lettuce, diced tomato, salsa, sour cream or guacamole in separate bowls if you want toppings. These are optional additions, not part of the six-ingredient ring. Keeping them outside the ring preserves the pastry texture. A crisp salad also balances the beef, cheese and dough.

CAN I PREPARE IT AHEAD, AND HOW DO I KEEP LEFTOVERS?

You can cook the filling a day ahead: chill promptly in a shallow covered container at 40°F (4°C) or below. Assemble with cold filling just before baking and allow extra baking time to reach 165°F. Refrigerate baked leftovers within 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F (32°C), and use within 3 days. Reheat in an oven until the filling reaches 165°F; a microwave softens the pastry. Freezing can impair the crescent texture.

WHAT ALLERGENS SHOULD I CHECK?

The crescent dough contains wheat, and cheddar contains milk. Check the dough package for other allergens such as soy, as formulations vary. The current Mild Taco ingredient list does not list mustard, but check every actual package and cross-contact statement. Optional sour cream adds milk; toppings and dough substitutions can change the allergen list.
